SRG installed 130 modified wire reefs along 420 linear feet of shoreline to help protect an eroding escarpment that has been experiencing severe erosion for several years. The reefs will provide a substrate for baby oysters, known as spat, to attach to. Once attached, the spat will filter the water and grow into mature oysters, attracting more spat to the reef. Over time, the reef will become self-sustaining, with the metal structures eventually disappearing. In a few years, the reef will be home to thousands of oysters, contributing to water filtration and creating habitat for fish, shellfish, and other aquatic invertebrates. Additionally, the reef will help absorb boat wake, wave, and storm energy, reducing the impact on the eroding shoreline. Sediment will gradually accumulate behind the oyster reef, helping to rebuild the eroded shoreline.
